Pastor Whitlock is a graduate of University of California at Berkeley and holds three degrees from The Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has served as a Sponsorship developer for resettling Amerasian refugees and has worked at the Metropolitan New York Synod in Manhattan. Pastor Whitlock was formerly pastor of two parishes (Zion Lutheran Church in Rahway, NJ, and St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoboken, NJ) for a total of 18 years. After retirement, she has been called to serve as an interim pastor. St. John’s is her second interim post.
Deacon Rich regularly brings communion to the hospitalized and home bound, offering a listening ear and loving heart. Rich also serves on a variety of church teams and groups, including the Property Mission Team, Social Ministry Mission Team, and Altar Guild. He is an Assisting Minister during worship and is in charge of worship leaders for the 10:00 a.m. service. In the wider church, Rich is part of the Synod (Tanzanian committee) and on the Diaconate Synod Council. He has been married for over 50 years to a lifelong St. John’s member – his beloved wife, Carol.
Deacon Gloria serves the church by assisting during worship and bringing communion to home bound members and room bound residents of the Lutheran Care Center. She routinely visits hospitalized members and friends. Gloria manages a Prayer Shawl Ministry that comforts people in time of crisis and need. She assists with the instruction for 5th grade 1st Communion classes and is active on Stewardship, Worship and Music Mission Teams. Gloria is always willing to help in other areas as needed.
Susan began as Music Director at St. John’s in 1998 and plays organ, directs the adult choir and handbell choirs, oversees the children’s choir program, string ensemble, brass ensemble as well a recorder ensemble. She received a B.A. in Music from Smith College and a Masters in Sacred Music from Wittenberg University. Susan teaches piano in the Hudson Valley and lives in East Fishkill with her husband Mike and two dogs. They have three sons.
Jeanne works as a facilitator, encourager, director, organizer, and motivator with these goals in mind – for people to have a passion for God that drives them to seek and use the gifts God has given them and to share the love of Jesus with others. She is also in charge of some administrative things such as publicity, congregation scheduling, and communication. Her other hat involves playing piano and leading the Contemporary Worship Team at the 8:00 a.m. service. Jeanne and her husband, Steve, have been married and members of this congregation for over 26 years. They have three children – Kaleigh, Jessica, and Joshua – who are a source of much joy and laughter in their lives.
As the director of youth ministry, Abby is in charge of faith formation activities for 6th grade through High School. This means everything from education through fun youth events. For 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, this means coordinating our confirmation program that prepares students to live out their baptismal call as they become adults. In addition to this, she also coordinates youth group activities for Middle School and High School to help the youth form connections with other youth, with the church, and with the world around them.
Diana is Office Administrator for the church and is in charge of building usage, community scheduling/calendar & communication, and prayer requests/announcements. While Diana spends most of her time getting all of that done, there are many, many other tasks Diana does for the church to run smoothly and effectively. She is a valuable member of our church staff.
Alison Schlak is a long-time member of St. John’s with experience in accounting and bookkeeping. She has taken over the bookkeeper duties for St. John’s and currently works in the church office on Wednesdays.
